Enrolment Information

We welcome enquiries about enrolment at St Mary's Primary School at any time of the school year. Below are answers to some commonly asked questions about how and when to enrol your child, and a brief explanation of our enrolment process.

We look forward to hearing from you and helping you with this very important decision in your child’s life.

What age should your child start school?

Children start school in Victoria at the beginning of the year they turn 5 by 30th April. They should have completed a 4 year old kindergarten program or equivalent in the previous year.

Want to make an enrolment inquiry?

We welcome enquiries at any time. When you contact us we may ask a few standard questions (including your contact details) to help us with your child’s enrolment needs and with our future planning. An inquiry does not mean you have made any commitment to our school.

We keep your enquiry on file if you wish so that we can contact you the year before your child is due to start school to advise you of our Open Days and enrolment activities.

The Parent Handbook and an Enrolment Application Form can be downloaded by clicking on the links.

Who can apply to St. Mary’s? Is the school ‘zoned’?

We accept applications for enrolment from everyone. If there are more applicants than places available in your child’s year, then we must follow the criteria required by the Catholic Diocese of Melbourne:

  1. Siblings of current families
  2. Catholics who live within, and close to, St Mary’s Parish
  3. Catholics who live outside the Parish boundaries (for pastoral reasons)
  4. Children of Orthodox families
  5. Other Christian children
  6. Non-Christian children, all within the school catchment area

If you belong to another Catholic Parish, we ask that you make your first inquiry there.

Please refer the the school zone map.

When should you apply for enrolment at St Mary's?

Enrolment applications for 2020 are taken from two years before your child is due to start school. You can lodge your application from now until 5th April 2019. We recommend that you complete and return the application as early as possible in Term 1, the year before your child is due to start school.

By completing an Application Form you are letting us know that you wish your child to attend St Mary’s School. At that stage, no enrolment deposit is required.

The school will require copies of the following:

  • A certificate of Baptism (if applicable)
  • An immunisation Certificate (issued by Medicare)
  • A Birth Certificate to be sent with this form or as soon as possible before the child starts school

Do you have open days and when are they?

Open Days are advertised on noticeboards outside the school, through flyers displayed at local kindergartens as well as on the website. We also mail out flyers to any parents with children due to enrol who have enquired previously and left contact details. Our first Open day in Semester one is Sunday 24th February. Our second Open Day is 31st March 2019 from 10:30am - 12:00pm. This Open Day coincides with the Open Days at Christian Brothers College and Presentation College Windsor.

If you are unable to attend our Open Days, we can make special arrangements for you to view the school on a day and time that suits. Just phone our school office to arrange an appointment (03) 9510 7420.

Letters of Offer

In Term 2, all  application forms received are reviewed according to the acceptance criteria. Letters of Offer are then sent to parents who are invited to attend an interview with the school Principal. This is an opportunity for us to share information regarding your child's commencement Foundation. After the interview, you will be asked to pay the $200 non-refundable acceptance fee to secure the enrolment position.

If we are unable to offer places to all applicants, some families may receive a letter advising that they have been placed on a waiting list. Second round of offers will be sent out should places become available.

Orientation

Foundation Children

In Term Four, two orientation sessions are planned for the incoming Foundation children. This helps them to become familiar with St Mary’s School while meeting and doing activities with their future classmates. Information regarding arrangements for the coming year is passed on by the Principal during the orientation sessions. Parents are then invited to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee during these activities so that they can meet families from their child’s class as well as Parents & Friends representatives. Our Foundation Orientation outline is:

FOUNDATION TRANSITION TIMETABLE:

First  Orientation                  October                   9:30am – 11:00am

Second Prep Orientation     November               9:30am – 11:00am

Wine and Cheese Night       November              7:30pm

This night is a social gathering where new families will meet a "current" families who will be there to support them  in the  first year at St Mary’s. This night is for parents only.

Story Time                   October                  9:00am - 9:30am

Story time is optional; children are welcome to attend one or all three days. The School Librarian or a Prep teacher will be available at that time

Letters are sent out to families letting them know the dates and times for orientation activities. Information sessions are held at the beginning of each school year for all parents to gather important information about the year ahead.

New Children from Other Year Levels

We encourage new students from years other than Foundation to try and spend one day at school in Term 4 to meet their classmates and  to become familiar with the school. Families are invited to contact the school to arrange a suitable day.
