Facilities

On entering the school, we hope that you will feel as we do, that it is a serious place of learning, set in an environment that is caring and supportive, but most of all fun.  St Mary’s is a dynamic and well-resourced school with skilled staff and caters for around 250 students.  This school has catered for the education of children since 1854.

We have two campuses at St Mary's. The main campus which is on Westbury Street and Dandenong Rd is where our Foundation to Four children are. It comprises two buildings - the main administration area and the Foundation to Year 3 classes. The second building which is the Berchman's Centre (named after one of our first Principals, Mother Mary Berchmans Carroll) is where our Year 4 children are.  It also contains the Library, a Reading Recovery room, Computer Lab and Number Intervention room. We also have a kitchen which is used by our Parents & Friends. The Senior Campus which is across the road behind CBC (opposite the church) is where our Year 5 & 6s are. We also have an art room in that building.  The Year 4-6s use the basketball courts near Alma Park at lunchtime. We share this facility with CBC during the day.

Our tree-scoped grounds provide for a variety of Physical Education Programs and passive pursuits while the Alma Park facilities and oval are use for sporting and recreational activities as well as a safe car parking area for drop-off and picking up of students.

Our school is fenced completely making it extremely secure.  The only access during school hours is through the office area where all visitors are issued with clearly identifiable visitors badges.  Children have access to modern inside toilets during school times and access to newer outside toilets for play and lunch times.  All rooms are renovated and have heating and air-conditioning for student comfort.  We have safe and challenging play equipment for all ages.

An extensive transition program ensures a smooth entry into the Prep program from all pre schools and Child Care Centres in the St Kilda, Prahran, Windsor and surrounding areas.  This transition program and a supportive Grade 6 Buddy system ensure your child will quickly form new friendships and make a confident start to primary school life.

The principal has an open-door policy and is available to discuss your child’s needs and progress.  St Mary’s provides parents with regular information on their child’s progress by our reporting days, written reports and through constant contact with class teachers and specialist staff.  Regular school assemblies, biweekly newsletters, class teacher’s newsletters and a school magazine also keep the school community informed of events and social activities.

The school uses the St Mary's Parish Hall which is located on the west corner of Westbury Street and Dandenong Rd. We use it for Assemblies, Physical Education, Peforming Arts, After Hours Care and on occasions incursions and curriulum based activities. The Hall is also occasionally used for parent functions.
